M. Chehov Riga Russian Theatre reconstruction completed with the inauguration of memorial plank

On August 19 Riga City Council, construction company RE&RE and architects office Graf X have inaugurated the memorial plank on completed reconstruction works at M.Chehov Russian Theatre, thus symbolically concluding the three year long reconstruction period of the building.
Reconstruction works of the theatre were begun on October 2, 2008. One and a half year before – on April, 2007 Riga City Council announced the technical project competition of reconstruction and restoration works. As the best was acknowledged the offer of architects’ office Graf X. On April, 2008 the technical project was ready and in a month the competition on building works was announced. Among all entrees as the best offer was admitted the one by the construction company RE&RE. The theatre complex was delivered into operation on July, 2010. Riga City Council has invested 15.6 million Lats in the full complex reconstruction.
During the building reconstruction and re-planning the complicated dismantling of the building was performed, preserving only the external façade of the building, as well as the important second storey, which premises were reconstructed in the initial appearance.
Today M.Chehov Riga Russian Theatre can boast with the one of the most modern stage construction solutions in Europe. In order to reach the full stage functionality, RE&RE significantly has raised the stage ceiling height and developed the unique solutions of the stage gallery fastenings. This will be one the rare theatres were each viewer will have a wide and excellent view of the stage irrespectively of the location of her seat.
At the same time Riga City Council and RE&RE is presenting to the inhabitants of Riga and city guests the exhibition “M.Chehov Riga Russian Theatre. About the dreams that come true.” The photo exhibition immortalizes the most interesting reconstruction and restoration moments, as well as shows changes that renovation brings in the theatre.
At the inauguration RE&RE director general Didzis Putniņš made a point that: “Opening this photo- reporting exhibition on theatre reconstruction and restoration works we can glance back with a real pride at the total team – client, architect and our work done; I would even say – to the cultural heritage object beginning a new life, were work is done professionally and in accordance with the highest restoration criteria.”
The exhibition will take place at Livu Square for the following two months.
