Restoration Works at Cesis New Castle Completed

On November 22 representatives from RE&RE and Cēsis County Municipality signed Handover Protocol regarding the completed restoration works at the Cēsis New Castle. Re&Re experts for more than 2 years performed historically significant and complicated restoration and reconstruction works of the 18th –19th century interiors of the Castle.
As a part of the restoration of the interior of Cēsis Castle experienced RE&RE specialists performed survey and fixation of the 18th Century interior to discover the original paintings and to draw up the program for further works. After the survey company restored the most valuable fragments of the ceiling and walls supplementing such fragments with renovated pieces of the original paintings. Works involved also restoration of flooring and fireplaces, and production and installation of age-specific items. The interior design was implemented in accordance with the original 18th Century design of Cēsis Castle. During the restoration project of the historical landmark RE&RE cooperated with Latvian Union of Restorers, AIG, management of Museum of Cēsis Castle, historian Dainis Brugis and Italian restorer Professor Alma Ortolan. To promote the development of professional and quality restoration environment in Latvia, broadening of the knowledge and experience of the restorers, RE&RE organized the foreign expert experience exchange workshops also in this project. The programme was initiated during the restoration of the building of Riga Stock Exchange [Rigas Birzas nams].
According to Didzis Putniņš, Director General of RE&RE, ‘The restoration works of interiors of the Cēsis New Castle was professionally complicated process, as it engulfs conservation of the cultural and architectural heritage, knowledge of the methods of the ancient craftsmen, history of the Castle and the related time period, awareness of the specifics of the operation of museum, and vast experience and high professionalism during the process of restoration. We are happy to conclude restoration and reconstruction works in this splendid castle. I believe that this castle is yet another historical and national landmark that would attract tourists from close and far reaches of the globe’.
Restoration of Cēsis New Castle was the last stage of the project for renovation of Cēsis New Castle so significant to the Cēsis County. Works included – construction, bringing order to the buildings, landscaping and renovation of the exposition. Restoration of the castle was performed with co-financing from European Regional Development Fund as a part of the project 'Revitalization of the Complex of Cēsis Castle for the Development of Tourism'.
